The Golden One

In 1962, Peggy imported her most famous Whippet, whose exceptional career as a show dog and producer earned him the title of 'The Golden One'. "Eng. & Am. Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth was imported from England in November 1962. He was bred by Mr. A.E. Halliwell. Fleetfoot was born on October 13, 1960. His sire was Ch. Bellavista Barry and his dam, Myhorlyns Anita. Ricky, as he was affectionately known, was a well-proportioned nineteen and three quarters inches tall and weighed twenty-two pounds. He was the winner of seven Challenge Certificates and had won the Hound Group at Blackpool before leaving for the United States.

"Ricky arrived in the US in tip-top condition, as he had been housed for two weeks at the home of my dear friend, Martine Collins of the Coveydown Kennels in England. Ricky debuted at the Worcester Kennel Club on December 16, 1962, where he won his first US Breed and Hound Group for a four-point major, handled by Bob Forsyth and judged by Mr. William Kendrick. After Worcester he was shown seven times and finished his championship with three four-point majors, two three- point majors, a single point and two points. He finished his championship on March 13, 1963.

"At retirement on February 16, 1965, after winning the Hound Group at Westminster, his overall record was: Eighty-seven times shown, seventy-six BOB, eleven BOS, twenty-nine BIS, fifty-four Hound Group Firsts. In addition he was 1963 Top Hound All Breeds, 1964 Top Dog of the Year, 1965 Top Producing Hound 1966, Top Producer All Breeds 1972, Kennel Review Hall of Fame Winner after being nominated for the award four times.

One of Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot's Best in Show wins in 1964 was at Westminster Kennel Club show, where Peggy's mother had won BIS in 1936. Claire and Peggy are the only mother and daughter who have won that honor in Westminster's history. Ricky was handled exclusively by Bob Forsyth."

As a top producer, Ricky earned the (posthumous) AWC title of ROMX, which indicates that he sired more than twenty-five AKC champion get. Among his progeny were the following winners: Ch. Pennyworth Mother Goose, Ch. Bettebrook Benchmark, Ch. Pennyworth Front Page, Ch. Pennyworth Burning Dream, Ch. Pennyworth Heatherbelle and Ch. Pennyworth Alice Blue Gown.
